Johnson Hardwood Flooring

What Are You Looking For?
Forever Tuff Finish
Forever Tuff Flooring
Fall brings out some new lines and features with Johnson Hardwood Flooring. Their ForeverTuff collection now has Tigerwood, which gives homeowners a wonderful option when you want contrast between light and dark. Tigerwood is very noticeable and looks great as the focus in a tropical décor, or even an urban setting. It is rare, and the cost may reflect that, but the extra bit of outlay will surely be worth it. The Tuscan series expands random width floor plank looks and comes in five colors.
Forever Tuff Floors
Forever Tuff Reviews
Their Carnaval collection is in a wide variety of colors and styles such as Brazilian Cherry and Brazilian Oak. It showcases exotic species and all kinds of flooring types from around the world. Their Renaissance collection features distressed hardwoods and hand scraped ones, to give your home that handcrafted and timeless look. As with these collections (many photos will show you what they look like), all of Johnson Hardwood Flooring products can be found on their website at www.jfloor.com.
Installation Tips
Johnson Exotic Flooring
Johnson Flooring Reviews

Before you either install your gorgeous hardwood flooring yourself, or call in a professional flooring installer, check out the room where you are going to lay down the flooring (or have it laid down). The surface should be dry and with absolutely no visible moisture. A pro installer will ensure the floor’s dryness by conducting moisture tests. All results of such tests should be made readily available to the homeowner before installation. Be aware that all products from Johnson Hardwood Flooring will change color over time. How much and where it changes color depends on the wood species and amount of UV light exposure. Wood planks usually get darker over time but some may become lighter. Before any installations, the homeowner should become aware of color variations in hardwood, the effects of any moisture dropped on or seeped into the wood, and the proper way to maintain the various wood species used for hardwood flooring.

It’s What’s Underneath That Counts

You’ve heard about inner beauty being important. With hardwood flooring it’s the hidden aspects of it that are crucial. Sub floor prep is vital to a long lasting and great looking hardwood floor. As with all floor surfaces and sub floors, they must be completely dry. If newly poured, a concrete slab can take months to be dry enough to lay a hardwood floor down on it. Moisture testing should not be done, at the minimum, until the concrete is at least thirty days old. Any sub floor must also be free from grease and anything else, such as spills or building materials. There is a difference in using plywood or concrete for a sub floor and your contractor or pro installer from Johnson Hardwood Flooring will offer advice and expert help, to enable you to prepare for the installation and in order for it to go quickly and smoothly.

Look Forward to Your New Floors
Johnson Premium Hardwood Flooring
Johnsons Exotic Flooring

Don’t be afraid of getting new hardwood floors installed. Decide what type and color and species you want. Seek out comparisons between the different planks, and be sure and get expert advice, because it’s offered freely at Johnson Hardwood Floors. The only problem you may encounter at the site and from their experts, is deciding on which quality floor you want to buy. But, that’s the fun part and soon all of your friends and family will be admiring the beautiful new hardwood floors you had installed in your home.

What Does Hypo-Allergenic Mean Exactly?

When something is hypo-allergenic it simply means that the product is manufactured with as few ingredients as possible — and it doesn’t cause reactions in most people who may suffer from various forms of allergies. In the industrial environment we live in today, many people develop allergies to a multitude of things. They can be allergies to chemicals used in the manufacture of flooring. They can be emissions put into the air by vehicles and machinery. People can be allergic to things they touch or put on

Green Flooring

their bodies, or even wear. Even plant materials in their natural form can cause some reactions in certain people. Merely brushing up against live or fresh stalks of bamboo can cause a rash and blisters. Sealing this type of product with another natural substance will usually solve that problem. Something that is hypo-allergenic is usually organic or natural, because the simpler and with the least amount of ingredients a product has, there is less chance that someone will react to chemicals in it. Bamboo flooring and hardwood flooring and even textile products such as area rugs and upholstery, can be made with fewer chemicals and less VOCs (volatile organic compounds). These VOCs can be a major cause of allergic reactions in people and an example would be paint that makes you sneeze of even older laminate flooring that makes you itch or cough. A lot of plastic wrap gives off chemical odors when you unwrap certain items. And, formaldehyde used in the manufacture of laminate and other products is a big trigger in sensitive people. Manufacturers are becoming far more aware of these triggers and will often label their products as hypo-allergenic.

Do You Have Allergies?

If you sneeze when you walk down the detergent aisle in a supermarket, or after following someone who is wearing perfume, or if you sneeze when there’s a lot of dust blowing around, then you are allergic to airborne particles. If you eat certain things (perhaps you are allergic to gluten — mostly in wheat products) or other foods like milk or berries or peanuts or shrimp, then those items may cause a rash or cough. Other things that can cause reactions are chemicals in unwashed clothing fabric or textile area rugs or upholstery, or formaldehyde or other chemicals used in the manufacture of some types of flooring. All of these reactions can be controlled by washing or avoidance or in the case of flooring products, looking at the labels and buying those that will be hypo-allergenic for you, personally.

Products That Are Hypo-Allergenic

Many products are made with the eye to help people who are sensitive to some substances. This benefits the consumer, and the aware manufacturer as that person will be grateful that there are many alternatives. Also, if you want to use laminate flooring to make yourself a spiffy new area in the family room, for instance, then unpack the planks (wear a light facemask if you are very allergic) and after disposing of the packing material, let the planks air out where a breeze can blow over them. Avoid moisture. It will help to buy laminates that are marked hypo-allergenic or “green” and that will give you a big head start.

You may find Hypo-Allergenic flooring at Floormall.com and Hardwoodbrokers.com

When it comes to the cost of natural wood flooring there can be some misconceptions based on preconceived ideas due to a lack of research before purchasing. Many people who have the budget would prefer to install hardwood floors or some other natural wood flooring but believe the cost is out of reach so the choice becomes mute before they even look into it. There are many discounts to be had when considering the choice of natural wood flooring for your home.

Sure, there are expensive wood floors available but if you are going for a natural wood design and are open to a variety of alternatives to the more costly types such as oak hardwood flooring than there are some options available you should consider. Bamboo is becoming popular these days and the eco friendly crowd has the advantage of Cork flooring as well as bamboo for natural wood/environmentally friendly flooring choices. Not only that but also these flooring types are considered inexpensive compared to their more ‘North American’ flooring brethren.

Cork flooring is a beautiful alternative to standard more expensive wood flooring and has many qualities the more traditional expensive flooring lack. Being moisture resistant and tough, durability is an important consideration when choosing cork floors. More importantly for frugal tastes is that cork flooring can be had for a fraction of the price of expensive hardwood varieties without sacrificing classic beauty and elegance.

Interestingly enough, cork flooring is installed in areas of the actual Library of Congress and has been known to maintain its longevity for up to one hundred years or more which is amazing. How is that for a vote of confidence for a very well priced flooring material that has yet to reach its true value based on its past obscurity in the flooring market? When more people realize the truly amazing attributes of cork flooring the price will surely rise for this exotic and durable flooring product.

Cultivated from the cork oak trees in the western Mediterranean, the harvesting programs from cork manufacturers is regenerative and eco-friendly. Cork has insulation properties and a natural elasticity that makes it very comfortable and healthy to walk upon and suitable for soundproofing. One would think that not only is this strikingly practical flooring material expensive but difficult to install, this is far from the truth.

Cork flooring can be purchased reasonably over the Internet through both wholesalers and retailers of flooring products. Research will guarantee an educated buying decision so do your homework and get at least 3 estimates and work the seller for a great deal. The price of cork flooring will vary from Internet sources to brick and mortar retailers. Prices average anywhere between $2.00 – $5.00 per square foot. Installation is something you can attempt on your own but the money you will save over regular hardwood flooring could be put into professional installation to play it safe and ensure the job is done correctly.

Here at Flooringnow, we love to promote Green Flooring. There are many reasons for this, but it seems that some of them are more well-known than others. Oftentimes we will receive questions to the effect of, “What makes it environmentally friendly? What makes a product ‘green’?” While we have already addressed elsewhere what it really means to be green, it remains to be shown that there is a standard that is followed for current new constructions, as well as large-scale renovations. In 1994, plans were put into play that would bring about the forming of a group that would standardize the accepted environmental aspects of a given building. This group, developed and endorsed by members of the USGBA – the United Stated Green Building Association – would come to be known as LEED, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. By 1998, LEED was ready to officially guide the rest of the nation towards green building with the use of a point system to plan and help grade the construction of a proposed project with the end result being an environmental creation that catered to the needs of the planet, in addition to the well-being and prolonged success of our society as a whole. It is this process that began to show developers and builders that while an average 2% more was spent on the materials and labor involved in building a LEED certified structure, the long-term costs were effectively reduced – at times by up to 10%. From the time of its inception until 2008, LEED has participated in over 14,000 projects worldwide, covering over a billion square feet – an admirable feet in its own right. The idea is to use a point system to rate and track the progress of proposed green buildings. Points are earned by following guidelines to various degrees within six general categories. Categories include: · Sustainable sites· Water efficiency· Energy and atmosphere· Materials and resources· Indoor environmental quality· Innovation and design process Depending on the type of flooring you are interested in, it will affect the amount of points you are capable of earning, not based on a restriction policy, but rather on the general characteristics of that floor. For example, Bamboo flooring generally makes two points, with a third if finished with a non-urea adhesive. It is to be understood that at this moment, recycled rubber flooring and cork flooring are the two most accommodating materials to use for flooring, when planned properly. Cork, in certain instances, can be creatively designed to gain a total of six LEED points, quite impressive when 26 points qualifies you for minimum certification. Over 32 points represents the “Silver” bracket of certification, while 39 to 51 points is “Gold” and 52 or higher is “Platinum”. Flooring itself can only contribute to three categories out of six: Materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, and innovative design. However, with a creative and skilled team, a new construction could easily gleam the full possible points out of a cork or bamboo floor.

Pre- and Post- consumer products play a large role in the construction of a new building in regards to earning points. Additional points can be earned according to the percentage of recycled products. For example, your home is $1 million dollars. To earn the first point for post-consumer products, a total of $100,000 would need to account for post-consumer products. To gain the second point, $200,000 is required. However, for pre-consumer products, double the amount is necessary as these types of materials are graded as 50%. Therefore, twice the dollar amount is necessary in pre-consumer products to achieve the same LEED points, $200,000 in pre-consumer products for the first point, and $400,000 for the second. Cork flooring, bamboo flooring, rubber flooring, and FSC certified hardwood flooring can greatly assist with the earning of these points.

The role of flooring in earning LEED certification can be significant, helping to achieve the result of a building that reduces the impact on the environment, as well as saving money in the long run.

Virtually every market today has geared – whether it is significantly or minutely – towards being more environmentally friendly. From your local grocer’s encouraging re-usable bags and even producing them for the public to purchase, to bigger industries like the automobile field pushing out new and innovative products to conserve natural resources such as fuel materials (oil, coal, wood) and recycle reusable products, like plastics and aluminums. Any industries that haven’t done so already are predicted to be going “green” soon enough.

Here at FlooringNow, we showcase products and species that are geared towards the current trends in flooring worldwide. And the current trend in flooring is going green.

Earnings season is upon us and investors are calling upon companies to reveal their first quarter results and to make predictions about the year to come. In April, Mohawk Industries, Inc. announced 2008 first quarter net earnings of $65 million. This was 28% below last year’s numbers. Net sales for the quarter were $1,738 million, a decrease of 6.7% from 2007. While the U.S. economy is slow, and credit has tightened, residential home sales have fallen, and thus have impacted the company.

On the bright side, spending on commercial construction has remained positive. The U.S. credit problems are even impacting Europe with its growth expected to be flat to modest overall. According to CEO and Chairman of Mohawk Industries, “performance for the first quarter exceeded our guidance for the period in a very difficult environment.” The CEO is optimistic due to the fact that the company has survived cyclical downturns in the past. In the meantime, the company is focused on improving productivity and quality, which is always a plus for consumers.

Mohawk is also investing in products and assets to enhance its future. While the company is executing carpet price increases, they should be in place by the end of the second quarter, and will hopefully stabilize. Even during these challenging times, new products are being shipped earlier than in prior years and the focus is on fashion and value engineered products. The company’s new Encycle tile with leading edge technology has benefits that make it more durable, environmentally friendly and economically advantageous. Many initiatives to reduce energy and water consumption are being implemented in Mohawk’s operations, which in the long-run should keep the company in a competitive position relative to its peers.

A new Mohawk consumer campaign is being launched that includes TV, print, and digital marketing that appeals to the design enthusiast. Mohawk is spreading the word that its offers are stylish and innovative while also being “green.” Strong growth in the commercial market is off-setting some of the weakness in the residential market thus allowing the company to advance with its research and development departments. Sales in Mexico and Canada have continued to expand as market exposure expands. Some of this success comes from the sales force being motivated and from new introductions that focus on the better performing commercial and high end remodeling segments. Cost reductions remain an issue of concern, thus initiating an overhaul of manufacturing productivity and inventory management. Although seasonal improvements will benefit the second quarter, it is expected that many of the same challenges will be present in the near-term. In spite of a difficult flooring market, Mohawk continues to modernize manufacturing facilities and create innovative products which will keep consumers coming back for more – long after the industry’s economic environment improves.

Shaw Floors has been in the news recently for a number of initiatives that the company is launching or has previously launched. For example, in April Shaw and Versatile Systems Inc. announced they will be working alongside CitiFinancial in a consumer credit financing arrangement. The plan entails a joint partnership to simplify and streamline the credit application process for flooring retailers and consumers. This will be accomplished by way of an attractive and easy-to-use in-store kiosk. This will be the first time a flooring company will offer two different models of Versatile’s kiosks. The models will include the Rockland and the Madison. The combination was demoed at the Shaw Design Center Convention which was held in April of 2008 in Palm Coast, Florida. It appears that Shaw was motivated to embark on this project in light of the current credit crunch. According to marketing manager, Scott Humphrey, “during this challenging market, it’s more important than ever to make the credit application process simple and accessible.” The company is hoping that they can swing people into making a flooring purchase with the newfound credit application ease. This move has been referred to as a “forward-thinking strategy” which Versatile is happy to assist with. Versatile is particularly experienced with providing technology solutions that drive operational efficiency while enhancing the customer experience.

As a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, Inc., Shaw Floors is the world’s largest carpet manufacturer. The company is a leading floor covering provider with more than $5 billion in annual sales. With approximately 31,000 associates, the company is well positioned to meet demands as the home improvement and construction markets improve. Headquartered in Dalton, Ga., the company manufactures and distributes carpeting, rugs, hardwood, laminate and ceramic tiles making its product offerings expansive enough to meet the needs of all consumers. They tailor to both residential and commercial customers.

Shaw is also positioned to capitalize on the environmental stewardship movement. Shaw has implemented hundreds of sustainability initiatives and more information about such initiatives can be found by visiting www.shawfloors.com. In January of 2008, Shaw received the first ever Vendor Green Steps Award, which was presented by Sherwin-Williams. According to the president of marketing at Sherwin-Williams, “Shaw’s admirable and aggressive green efforts have set an industry standard for sustainability.” The award was presented to Shaw’s national accounts team and environmental team in recognition of its recycling post-consumer carpet, development of sustainable products and continuous improvements in energy conservation.

The boom in eco-friendly products has reached nearly every branch of the economy, from children’s toys to home improvement and interior décor. Homes are being produced on general “green” guidelines. Cars are being built on more environmentally sound guidelines. Virtually any product has a green counterpart somewhere. In flooring, there are several obvious choices for the green consumer, including cork, bamboo, and any product endorsed by the FSC. It is not any of these that we focus on here today, though its environmental benefits are significantly of note. Of course, Lyptus Flooring is what I refer to.

As the name implies, Lyptus is made from a Eucalyptus tree – two, actually. Lyptus woods are produced from a hybrid species of tree resulting from the natural conjoining of Eucalyptus Grandis and Eucalyptus Arophylla. As far as sustainable forests go, the plantations that Lyptus is harvested from are relatively unique. Located in Brazil, these plantations demote the clearing of old-growth forests. The plantations are entirely sustainable, and play off of Lyptus’ natural ability to reproduce independently. Saplings will normally sprout straight from the stump of the tree fallen.

A great advantage to Lyptus’ environmental standpoint is the time it takes to produce a growth of forest. Lyptus trees mature in about fifteen years – a full 45 years shorter than most other hardwood trees. A customer might think then, that this is a softer, less durable option for flooring. In fact, Lyptus’ Janka rating is 1550 – almost three hundred points higher than Red Oak, the benchmark hardwood used in referencing hardness.

Lyptus refers to the hybrid species used for hardwood flooring, but it also refers to Weyerhauser’s brand name for the line of Lyptus products. At the moment, Weyerhauser’s Lyptus line offers both engineered and solid hardwood flooring, in addition to lumber, plywood, and veneer. Since Aracruz Produtos de Madeira – a subsidiary of Aracruz Celulose – bred the hybrid species, they own the rights to it, as well as several plantations for its sustainable growth in Brazil. Aracruz abides by its own environmental standpoints, and is not FSC certified.

It is undeniable, however, that Lyptus is indeed a solid choice for green flooring, with much respect given to our global ecosystem.
