Below is an interview with FloorMall.com’s President and CEO, Marc Henderson. Henderson runs FloorMall as an honest and straight forward company and this philosophy is represented in his answers. This information session is a great place for homeowners to find answers to all of their most pressing questions. The interview will also provide insights on how FloorMall works to save its customers thousands of dollars on floor coverings. But if you still have specific questions or concerns afterward, feel free to contact Henderson directly at ceo@floormall.com.

Are these products first quality products? My local retailer says they are not because your pricing is so low.

Yes! This is definitely one of our most common questions we receive on a daily basis. The answer is quite simple, YES. Why wouldn’t they be?

Why would stores tell us that?

For some reason this is a scare tactic that some local flooring stores LOVE to use to scare you, the consumer, away from buying online. I’m sure that is works well on some consumers but the majority just don’t fall for it. When I was looking to buy a flat screen TV last year, the BEST BUY salesperson did NOT say that if I purchased it online it would be inferior quality or second grade. I just don’t understand this tactic by local stores, it’s just so obvious. I guess when selling products some business owners throw ethics out the door to keep the lights on.

So why is FloorMall.com cheaper?

As far as our pricing goes, I hope that is obvious also. If not then ask yourself this. Why is Wal-Mart so much cheaper than their competitors? Volume. The sheer volume of flooring that we sell can be staggering for a local retailer. In some cases we sell more flooring in our first hour of business than some retailers sell all month.

Why do you not display pricing on some of your products? Some of your online competitors do!

This has to do with Minimum Advertised Pricing (MAP). Some manufacturers are starting to request and require that online dealers advertise a minimum price. Let’s not get this confused with Manufacturers Suggested Retail Pricing (MSRP). They are worlds apart. MAP pricing is required where MSRP is suggested. Online sales, whether flooring or electronics, are so massive compared to any one local market it is hard to compete with companies like Floormall.com.

How does it affect Floormall.com to decline to advertise pricing on these products?

It’s simple, we WILL NOT gouge the customer with pricing. To be honest with you, from an industry insider, MAP pricing forces a retailer, local or online to mark up products, in my opinion, in excess of market value. In my opinion it is pure price gouging. We will not partake in overpricing products, EVER. Pricing has to be fair to the consumer. So, when you are shopping on our sites and see this “To accommodate Manufacturers and Local Vendors, we are withholding MAP Pricing for certain Product Lines. Call 888-932-3566 or click here for a custom quote on this product”, you will now know that we are protecting YOU, the consumer from overpaying on your next purchase.

Will I receive a Manufacturer’s Warranty if I buy online?

YES, why wouldn’t you? We hear hundreds of consumers weekly say, “I just left Manufacturer X’s website and they say they will not warranty a product that is bought online”. The real question is, is it legal for manufacturers to limit their warranties based on whom you buy from.

When put that way, it would make some consumers mad.

And rightly so! Will you get a warranty? Yes! Here is why. In 1975 the Federal Government enacted a law called the MAGNUSON-MOSS Warranty ACT. Section 108 of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act addresses this question directly by indicating that:

“Generally, tie-in sales provisions are not allowed. Such a provision would require a purchaser of the warranted product to buy an item or service from a particular company to use with the warranted product in order to be eligible to receive a remedy under the warranty.”

Essentially, this means that the provision on your warranty which requires you to buy ONLY from a particular company or a type of company (i.e. online store or brick-and-mortar) as a condition to the use of the warranty is not allowed. Whether your point of purchase was from an online store or a retail establishment, the warranty can be used and applied as intended. You can find it here also: business.ftc.gov/documents/bus01-businesspersons-guide-federal-warranty-law.

Rest assured, we won’t sell you floors without reasonable warranty terms, this is part of our commitment to each and every customer.

Why is there a minimum order requirement?

This question can be a tricky one to be honest with you. It has to do with Shipping damages. Flooring, even though durable once installed can be very fragile during shipping. A great example is Ceramic and Porcelain tiles. Once laid down are virtually indestructible but on a pallet in the back of a semi-truck traveling 2500 miles can break like glass. This is usually NOT the case in orders above 200 sq ft.

Why is that?

When a customer orders 200 sq ft or more of product then the flooring must be banded and strapped to the pallet making the flooring more secure in transit. Anything under 5 boxes is usually shipped via UPS, DHL or FedEx, in single box format. What happens to these I’m sure I do not have to explain. With our volume and number of orders that are possibly under 200 sq ft, we would struggle to handle the damage claims that will definitely occur. We are always looking for new and improved ways to ship our products to our customers and this could possibly change in the future.

Why does my business have to be in a commercially zoned location? I.E. I run my eBay business out of my home. OR I’m a contractor and work out of my truck, can you bring it to my house?

These two question are quite common for us but both have the same answer. It is all about the freight companies. You see, when a freight company picks up your order from one of our warehouses or from the manufacturer they are usually picked up with a 53 foot long semi-truck. This truck will then travel the distance to your home with numerous stops along the way. These same trucks are NOT allowed in residential neighborhoods because of the length and weight of the trucks. Therefore the semi-truck must go to the nearest terminal and freight must be put on a smaller truck that is allowed into your neighborhood.

So this is really about money-saving techniques only possible for certain destinations?

That’s right! With this one extra step you now have extra man hours, fuel and time. With our FREE SHIPPING offer you can see how you must be in a commercially zoned location for us to keep your shipping process simple enough save you thousands on your order.

I just got off the phone with a sale representative and they offered me a special price. They said I have to buy within a certain time frame, like today. Why?

Another great question with an honest answer coming. A lot of our consumers are dumbfounded when we ask them “Are you in the market to purchase today?”. This might be the first time you have heard this and might even think it is an unorthodox way of doing business but we must do this simply to see if you are a serious buyer or in the beginning stages of buying.

How does my buying readiness help save money?

One way this helps us keep low overhead is by saving time. An example is when a customer calls to buy part number CB1211. Our site pricing currently is $4.07 per sq ft. If the customer is in the market to buy 2000 sq ft then we would like to extend a discount and do not mind it if YOU, the consumer ask for a special deal. Its OK!! Here’s where the tricky part comes in. This particular product is NOT a stocking item for us. It is actually sitting in the warehouse of the Manufacturer, essentially making this order a drop shipped order. For us to offer you a deeper discount we now have to make a phone call to request cheaper pricing for your order. As you can imagine we are asked the exact same question from the manufacturers sales rep. “Is the customer going to be purchasing today?”. This is why you may hear “are you in the market to purchase today?”

Things are changing for retailers and consumers alike. Thanks to new changes which have been pushed through by the National Retail Federation the swipe fees for debit cards are being cut in half. While the decision is final the changes aren’t going to happen over night. These changes will enable retailers to attract customers with lower prices and higher value. It may seem like a small change but the reduction of swipe fees has the potential to place billions of dollars back into the economy. And this is a welcomed development in economic times which have been proven difficult for store owners and customers alike. The new debit card swipe fees will be capped at 21 cents per transaction. This will also include .05 % of the purchase price and one cent for fraud protection. Now contrast that with the 44 cents which is currently being charged on average purchases—a fee that can reach several dollars on more expensive items.

This whole issue may seem like glorified penny pinching but did you know that debit card swipe fees provide banks with 20 billion dollars annually? And now with the new cap it has been estimated that store owners and consumers will be spared $7 billion. The fee on a $100 transaction will be about 27 cents, which is a far cry from the $1.50 currently being collected. Establishing the new debit card swipe fees has taken more than five years and it looks as if the process will be well worth it.

If you’re looking for a retailer which doesn’t have any swipe fees to speak of, whatsoever, you should turn to FloorMall.com. You can find great hardwood flooring at incredibly low prices, without any of those pesky hidden fees!

The Multifamily Production Index, or MPI, which is used to measure this market rose, from 41.7 percent to 44.4 in the second quarter of this year. It may not seem like much, but it’s the highest the MPI has been since 2006. This means that this is the best time to take full advantage of your rental properties. In order to increase their value you can beautify your rental units with durable laminate flooring from FloorMall. It’s important to be prepared in a time where Multifamily Housing is on the rise.

Who, in their right mind at least, would enjoy paying, for instance, two dollars for a cork tile, when they can pay one dollar? This is what Marc Henderson, founder of Floormall.com thought of, when he first conceived of this great online company. Floormall.com has been in existence for over seven years. They strive to achieve the lowest possible prices for their customers by working closely with manufacturers both large and small, in order to obtain those generous discounts.

Floormall.com has had some extremely interesting requests from customers. One of the most memorable was a request put in by the South Eastern Railway Museum in Duluth Georgia. They wanted to restore the Warren G. Harding train, and needed fine tile along the lines of that which had been used in a few Pullman rail cars from the 1920s. Floormall.com is proud to be able to help the museum restore a prized piece of our American history. This will make the Pullman car available for future generations to see, and admire.

As of June 15th, 2010, Floormall.com has joined forces with simpleFLOORS and they can now offer the latter company’s flooring to residential and commercial markets and others. Floormall.com is also able to showcase Kathy Ireland’s area rugs, which come from manufacturer Shaw Industries. Another website, Unfinishedflooring.com, was launched on May 13, 2009 and it focuses on unfinished wood species. They also provide tips and advice on how to best work with the different kinds of woods. This site is geared towards DIY enthusiasts in particular.

With 483 store locations, Ann Taylor Loft chose 12″ x 12″ onyx black floor tiles from Mohawk Colorations, for their floors. The world’s largest museum complex, the Smithsonian Institution, purchased unfinished White Oak 4″ x 0.75″. ZPizza, which is a rapidly growing chain of gourmet health-conscious pizza stores, chose Marazzi I Sigilli , Roghe Cotto 12″x12″. Floormall.com prides itself on saving homeowners time and money with their flooring projects, and they are also proud of the fact of being able to serve major retailers and institutions as well.

Another such retailer is Banana Republic, and they purchased three-inch prefinished Brazilian Teak. Jessica McClintock used her skills learned at an early age from her grandmother to become a fashion icon to an entire generation. McClintock purchased engineered wood called Ash Polar and it was stained white, for a lovely romantic look. Planet Fitness, an extraordinary gym, chose hard-wearing flooring in Pergo Elegant Expressions, an 8″ plank with underlayment, in a Berkshire Oak finish. Stone Lodge, which creates single-family homes built as mountain homestead lodges, is located in Southern Vermont.
As we move into Summer, thoughts of the holidays may already be looming in the back of your mind. If there’s always a large crowd over at your house for Thanksgiving or Hannukah or Christmas and New Year’s, consider re-doing your dining room. The floors may need replacing, and the walls repainting, and perhaps you need a new dining table. What type of flooring is best for a dining area? A solid and non-porous surface is easier to clean. It could be hardwood, laminate, tiles, linoleum, or something else. If you have no idea what you’d like then looking through a virtual catalog, such as the ones they have at floormall.com, may inspire you.

Some flooring is easier to install than others. Click and lock or floating floors are the easiest. A piece of linoleum would be okay and it’s super-easy to put down, and there isn’t any worry that it’ll look old-fashioned, these days. That would be good for an informal dining room but if you have a more formal one as well, then hardwood flooring or stone or ceramic tiles may work better. They can be a little harder to install but a pro could be hired as well as getting more info on the process through floormall.com. Spacers should be used and there are different placement patterns for ceramic or stone tiles.

Sealing the floor that’s in a dining room is crucial because of spills. Tiles and their grout can be sealed, as well as hardwood flooring. Linoleum is already sealed and vinyl is as well. After you install your new dining room floor, or have it installed, get some advice on what type of cleaning products to use. When the dining room has been refreshed you can decide on whether you want to use your old dining table and chairs, or get some new ones. Whatever choice you make you’ll want your new floor to be showcased! A homeowner may also want a rug (cleanable) under the dining table. After everything is done you can work on the extra-fun part — a centerpiece.

Centerpieces can be seasonal and changed, or year round and an eclectic grouping of your favorite things. If you have candles in your centerpiece and plan on burning them, then be aware of what’s touching their bases, as well as the fact that unscented candles need to be used around food. Guests want to smell your good cooking and not orange blossom or another strong scent. You can create a centerpiece from found natural objects or a few interesting flea market finds. Don’t overpower the table and leave room for the dinner plates! Themes around holiday time work wonderfully, but be sure that the decorations are in keeping with the rest of your house, and subdued rather than flamboyant. For flooring tips about the rest of your house, check out the pages at floormall.com

Every once in a while you come across a very interesting customer request. Sometimes it’s laying down hardwood for an old prince’s palace or a celebrity that needs high quality cork flooring in their guest house. It is very rare however, to be charged with the task of providing fine tile in the style of a 1920s Pullman rail car. FloorMall is honored to be working with the Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth Georgia to restore a prized piece of American history for future generations to see.

Here are some facts about President Harding and his Rail Car:

His locomotive trip to Alaska, dubbed “the great dream of the duchess,” taken just before the end of his term was to be his last. He fell ill on the train and died soon after at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco.

Some suspect that President Harding may have been killed by bad crab meat that was consumed on the train over several days while in Alaska. Some have even gone as far as to say that his wife poisoned him! Though these claims are apocryphal and have generally been discredited.

The former President, as a testament to his dexterity and sense of adventure, even conducted the train for a portion of his trip from Wasilla to Willow Alaska with his wife, Florence Harding, in the fireman’s seat.

President Harding was known to have a number of lady friends, including his paramour, Carrie Phillips. Interestingly, the love letters between the President and his female friends have, by court order, been sealed in the Library of Congress until the year 2014!

Well, your floor may not be literally blue (or maybe it is) but if it’s sad, then you might consider replacing it. Sometimes, flooring such as tile flooring or any hard surface, can get stained or damaged and even if it’s a little corner of the floor, that may detract from your overall nice look which you have worked hard to maintain. If your tile or other flooring has aged, the color difference between old and new tile can be striking. You may need to purchase all new tile flooring, and there are many different types to choose from. If you are looking for a bit of solid info on installing the floor yourself, then check out floormall.com. They have a university section where you can learn all kinds of things about flooring.

Tiles have been around from ancient times and can be made from a host of different materials. Today, they are ceramic or porcelain or vinyl or real wood (parquet tiles) or cork or leather or stainless steel, or even exotic woods and other substances. A tile is a square, usually 12″ x 12″ for floors or sometimes 18″ x 18″ or even 6″ x 6″. Tiles can also be rectangular. Octagonal tiles can be used for tile flooring and they fit quite nicely together. Think about how a beehive looks inside and the honeycombs all lined up snugly. Maybe you’d like a blue floor. Really.

Different shades of blue tile flooring can depict a sea theme, or lend a nautical air to a seaside cottage. Be careful if you do blue tiles in a bathroom. On the floor and on the walls and in the shower could become overpowering. All one color and you’d feel claustrophobic. Too dark a color on the floor would be hard to keep clean. If you need any advice on what type of tile flooring to get, cruise on over to floormall.com. They’ll offer plenty of great advice. The ancient Greeks loved blue tiles. The ancient Egyptians did as well. If you have a small room, then laying large tiles diagonally makes it look much bigger.

For our modern floors there are so many choices for tile flooring, or any other kind of floor. Installation materials and temperature really do matter as to the end results you get when flooring is installed. Always make sure your floor is level before performing any kind of tile flooring job. There are cement-like levelers you can pour to make it even. Installing a subfloor is also a great idea. Grout is necessary for tiles after you have got them stuck down and this can be either matching, or a different color. The grout should match the tiles as if it’s too stark a contrast, the tiles can look weird. Be sure and place spacers between your tiles or your floor may look like a tornado hit it and wrongly laid tiles can be a real mess to get up. If you need help installing your tile flooring, check out the pros at floormall.com.

If you have been considering redoing a couple of rooms in your home — perhaps with bamboo or hardwood or even a spiffy natural stone tile design, shopping for nice area rugs could serve you well. They are both decorative and protective. Of course, all good quality flooring, such as can be found at floormall.com, can withstand most kinds of foot traffic. There are some types of flooring that may benefit from a nice carpet or rug, but even if they are just decorative, checking out the latest designs will add warmth and comfort to your home, and bare toes!

Today’s bamboo flooring, for instance, is both attractive, very “green”, and wears well. If you have a pathway in your room, with newly laid down bamboo, it doesn’t hurt to protect against some of the “hard knocks” of life, such as children running inside with their sport shoes on, or large dogs playing, etc. If you have bamboo in a new office, and are using a small-wheeled office chair, for instance, protecting the area behind your desk protects the floor from dent marks if your large uncle Charlie visits and sits in that chair. Even the very sturdy hardwood or tile floors are protected from moisture after Summer pool parties, and some of the smaller area rugs are very easy to both air and dry out, and keep clean. They are also an anti-slip agent for the wet feet of little ones. If you are considering putting down a good quality of wood but are unsure about how to do it, free information can be found at the floormall.com university.

Choosing an area rug is really about two things — do you like it, and does it compliment your flooring and home? As there are so many floor colors, so are there colors of carpeting and rugs. Bamboo flooring, for instance, especially if it’s that lovely darker caramelized color (check out the many variations of bamboo flooring at floormall.com), takes well to a lighter tan carpeting with a nice border. Something in a natural pattern would be great and would suit the theme and airiness of bamboo. If you have a darker hardwood or laminate floor, a richer-toned color for your area rug will suit you. If there’s just a pathway through the room or an area in front of a sofa, for instance, then a carpet runner will be perfect. Many runners are regular area rugs, that is, no more of that indoor/outdoor weave in a solid bright blue or dark green. You can get that still, but it would probably not be for your living room.

All in all, pick out what type and color of flooring you need to install and take a look at floormall.com for inspiration, knowledge and supplies, then after it’s been laid down, grab an area rug or two and your new room or rooms will be finished off perfectly!

One thing that a family room floor has to have is durability. There’s likely to be high traffic on a family room floor. People of all ages, both homeowners and guests, plus pets, walk or run across the floor several times a day. The weather, if it’s raining or snowing outside, or muddy, is a factor. What works best are family room floors that can be cleaned easily and that also last a long time.

Real hardwood is very durable and can withstand many years of use, if it’s sealed and maintained properly. Carpet squares are excellent because they are laid down without any kind of adhesive and therefore they are easily removed and changed if they become stained or worn. Ceramic tiles also wear well and can be easily cleaned under any weather conditions. A good quality wall to wall carpet is probably the least favorite flooring for a family room, because if it gets stained it can be cleaned, but often some of the stains can be hard to remove. A sealed surface is best for family room floors.

Linoleum, and it’s excellent these days, is a popular choice as it’s now very eco-friendly and made from recycled materials. Concrete is considered pretty hard for a room where children play, but a good quality engineered wood floor or high quality laminate is perfect. When a family has many activities going on they shouldn’t have to worry about the floor. Even vinyl tiles, which are easy to lay down because they are peel and stick, can be used. They are available in a wide variety of colors and styles and they can look like stone or other natural substances. Whatever is used on a family room floor, the homeowner should keep a few pieces of spare parts, as it were. This makes it much easier to replace a damaged section.

Discounted Tile Flooring

If a family has older children, or no children at all, or the children have grown, then family room floors can be geared more towards the adult, with any possible future resale of the home to be kept in mind. If you are considering putting in a new family room floor, or having one installed by a professional, then study what traffic it will get and the ages of your children (if any), guest usage, and what pets may be running over it. There are many sources for family room floors and they grow every day. Recycled materials, and renewable resources can be used, plus organic and chemical free ones if anyone in your family is sensitive or has allergies.

A great flooring to have installed is one made from recycled hardwood as it works in many ways. It’s already been beaten up so can only age gracefully, It may be sanded and then resealed several times if it starts out being of a substantial thickness. As it’s recycled, it does help our environment. Recycled wood can cost a little more but it has character, and that’s something that’s often worth paying a bit extra for.

Tile Flooring

Tile flooring, in its many forms, has been around for millennia. We have evidence that the ancient Romans and Egyptians used stone tiles for their floors. The ancient Romans liked marble a lot and also may have used that gorgeous stone as well. The ancient Egyptians could have used ceramic or clay tiles, plus natural stone paver-type tiles. Today, there is a huge variety of tile flooring that a homeowner can purchase. The choice is so varied that just narrowing it down might take a little research and design work.

Tile Flooring by Mohawk

Most any store that carries home improvement products will have some assortment of tile flooring if you want to get your feet wet and try a small room. An in-home utility room would be a wonderful first project as it can be left unfinished for as long as you want, while you work out a few kinks. For floors that may get a lot of wear and tear, or dampness (such as that utility room or perhaps a laundry area or kitchen), ceramic tiles are perfect for a first-timer. Because they are manufactured in a factory, they are of a uniform size and thickness. This makes laying them on the floor much easier than, say, natural stone tiles. The latter can be slightly off on measurements and this type of travertine, or slate, or other natural stone tile flooring will turn out uneven if laid in the normal grid pattern that ceramic tiles are mostly laid in. Natural stone tiles have to be staggered like a brick wall when laid, so that any unevenness is hidden. Ceramic tiles are usually cheaper than natural stones tiles so if you break a few, it doesn’t make much difference.

Tile Flooring by Daltile

If you really get into laying some tile flooring, a wider variety of materials and colors and patterns can be ordered online or at a dealer or larger big box store. If you’d like a very simple first tile flooring project, vinyl tiles may be used. You just peel off the backing and stick them to your floor, which has to be smooth and bump free. Lay them out in the pattern you want first, then when you are happy, go for it. Measure out the center point of your floor and go from there. They can be cut with heavy duty scissors. Tile flooring may be made from natural stones like granite and marble and travertine and slate, or ceramic in many forms, or even cork or real hardwood or vinyl, plus many other exotic substances. There are even carpet tiles, which are just larger squares of carpet that may be laid in a pattern or one color, and they are not glued so that if one gets damaged, you just whip it out of there and replace it.

Hard tiles as they are being laid need spacers between each side so that an even space is left for grout, when the mortar is dry. Grout should be sealed so that it is not affected by most stains and moisture. Ceramic tiles can be deep cleaned, as well as the grout at a later date, then resealed, if they become grimy with age. The choices in tile flooring are virtually limitless. Start simple, then move on to a more complicated project. Seeing the new floor that you laid down yourself, every day, will give you a sense of satisfaction that is hard to beat.

Tile is truly an amazing material that offers you limitless possibilities in designing a unique and dramatic look for your home. From floor tiles to wall tiles, let’s discover some of the best practices in tile design today.

Mix-&-Match Color Tones, Textures and Patterns

In this bathroom featured below, the designer selected a beige and brown toned floor tile and coupled it with dark brown and mosaic wall tile in different sizes. Juxtaposing the large solid wall tile against the mosaic creates a very original look that really makes this bathroom stand out. Because of recent advances in technologies, tile manufacturers have come up with a variety of creative new tile colors and tones, so make sure you make the most of this new wide range of options. Traditional cream-colored tiles and stones are still very popular and a great choice, but think about combining different tile color tones, textures and patterns to create your own very unique atmosphere.

Mix & Match Tile Sizes

Don’t simply install a plain square 12×12 tile floor. At least not until you have considered mixing and matching different tile sizes. Consider using combinations of 6×6 and 12×12 tiles. Or you can go with fancier patterns and use 6×6, 12×12 and 18×18 tiles together in the same room. You can even consider using different patterns on different parts of the floor, and separate each area with a nice border tile, or use different tile sizes on your walls. Confused? Don’t be. You can have fun and get as creative as you would like. Check out the picture below showcasing the Derby collection from the Spanish tile manufacturer SuperCeramica (www.hardwoodbrokers.com). A simple combination of 12×24 and 2×24 ceramic tiles with a metal border accent achieves a powerful effect for a beautiful wall tile.

Consider New Looks

When designing your new floor tile or wall tile, it’s well worth taking the time to look for design pictures and inspiration. Tile manufacturers’ websites often showcase their latest collections in room settings. This will help you become more imaginative and discover the latest trends in tile & stone. Technology has changed so much over the past decade and manufacturers are now coming up with truly amazing tile designs. The picture below features a floor from Italgres, a Spanish tile manufacturer that introduced its new Ikronos and techwood collections in 2008 (Tile Flooring)

Now you can enjoy the durability of tile and the look of wood at the same time! You can also explore new color opportunities, with dark blue or light brown colors and tones.

Options are limitless and with a little bit of research and help from design sites, you can come up with a floor tile or wall tile that can really turn your room extraordinary. You can start by visiting a popular flooring tile website where you can view a variety of flooring tile and wall tile galleries online. Also check out manufacturers such as Dal-Tile or American Olean for more tile design ideas.
